Air Cooled Heat Exchangers

Hello everyone,

It is really hot in this part of the planet. AccuWeather says 49 C or 120 F at this moment.

In many plants here, cooling feedstock or products is a challenge. A commonly used system is air cooled fin fan heat exchangers in these plants. Sometimes refrigeration units and chilling units are added.

For reliability/maintenance /rotating equipment specialists, these systems consume an effort to maintain their functionality. Because of the large number of these units (hundreds), they are poorly monitored.

How common do you have such systems in your facilities? How well are they instrumented?

We have many of these on our hydraulic units, and 1 on each of our 7 air compressors. Typically they get measured at least quarterly on a route. Since I have been in the program fan blades needing cleaned due to unbalance has been the only work order written. The only instruments on ours are temperature probes for the process getting cooled. Typically our maintenance department is alerted when the temperature reaches alarm level and the coolers are cleaned with a fire hose.

Currently 8 :30am I,ts 17 c and we are promised 28c today which is crazy hot for ireland, Thursday is promised at 30c.

At a power station outsiĆ°e all day, so loads of water required.

As we say in ireland....'we aren't designed for this kind of heat' in ireland anyway.
