I was looking through the Sealmaster mounted bearing engineering section to find the insert number for a fan bearing we have. One of the entries was for a shaft size of 1-1/4R and then just below it is 1-1/4 without the 'R' (Imperial measurements). They use different insert numbers but can't figure out what the 'R' designation means.

I've googled variations of "specifying shaft size" and the only thing that seems remotely applicable is something about modulus of rigidity on a site talking about torsional forces.

Anyone have a clue? I've never encountered it in any other discussions of shaft size.

If you can't find a real answer, I would consider it a typo!

Bearing dimensions are different except for the bore -- see below.


1-1/4R shaft -- Sealmaster 1-14 Bearing Insert, Standard Duty, Setscrew Locking Collar, Felt Seals, 1-1/4" Bore, 62mm OD, 1-1/2" Width, 7/8" Outer Ring Width

1-1/4 shaft -- Sealmaster 2-14 Bearing Insert, Standard Duty, Setscrew Locking Collar, Felt Seals, 1-1/4" Bore, 72mm OD, 1-11/16" Width, 11/16" Outer Ring Width

Thanks, John! Couldn't find anything like that in all the downloads I have.  Do they make any notation of that on the bearing nameplate?

Now I just have to find that insert number's fault frequencies. I'm working up a cheat sheet for our techs so they don't have to go hunting for the information.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I think I got it narrowed it down to 3 pages so someone doesn't have to go hunting through the tables to get what they need. It was a little confusing the first time I went through that process. Much of it was cut & paste with a little bit calculation to convert their 'factor' for fault frequency to orders and added a couple of examples. CSI has the series designations in the FRQCAL database with the three letter acronym of 'SEA' for the manufacturer. I didn't bother verifying my calculations with their listings.

If you'd like a copy, PM me. Can't attach a document from my computer and don't have a public web site to link to it. Caveats are that I only looked at the mounted ball bearing information, there could be some typos, there could be some design changes since the datasheets were published that I used, and it's not meant to be used to specify a bearing for a specific application. In that case, go through your bearing distributor or contact Sealmaster for the appropriate selection. My intent was to help our technicians to get the information quickly and without too much confusion. If you find a mistake, let me know.
